SAFETY

Fireworks, like all explosives, have the potential to be dangerous, even deadly, if not handled properly. If you don't think this is a real concern, there are plenty of documented cases of severe injuries (3rd degree burns, blindness, disfigurement, loss of limbs, death) to prove you wrong. Furthermore, Canada is one of the countries with the strictest fireworks regulations in the world, and subsequently one of the lowest pyrotechnic-related accident rates.
This is not to say that fireworks are not safe to use. In fact, when used as directed, they are essentially harmless. Good supervision, basic safety precautions and a little common sense are all that is required to ensure a safe and enjoyable shoot. Here are some basic safety guidelines when using fireworks:

1) Check all items prior to use for any inconsistencies or flaws in craftmanship. Damaged fireworks should never be used. Avoid excess handling.

2) Find a proper firing location, with an ample amount of wide open space, away from buildings and trees. Clear any loose debris from the shooting area. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand in case things turn ugly.

3) Be sure to check local bylaws before shooting. Nothing puts a damper on things more than having the police haul your fireworks away, after they write you a ticket.

4) Keep all spectators atleast 100 feet away from firing range.

5) Always wear safety goggles when lighting any fireworks display or individual item. Avoid wearing extra baggy and flammable clothing. This means leave your oversized nylon Adidas track suit at home when you are out shooting!

6) Never lean over any fireworks while lighting. You wouldn't look down the barrel of a loaded gun, so don't do this!

7) As much as possible, light only one item at a time. If you are putting on a public display, then an assistant is essential.

8) Do not attempt to re-light any items that don't fire. Carefully set them aside and return them for a refund.

9) Clean up after yourself.
